<p>In 2016, <strong>Pokémon</strong> specialist Game Freak released <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/3ds-eshop/pocket_card_jockey">Pocket Card Jockey</a></strong> on the 3DS. Beyond the cute aesthetics, the eShop title was a dangerously addictive combination of horse racing and solitaire. Here on Nintendo Life, we gave it seven out of ten stars and said it was worth a look.</p>
<p>A series of interviews with the game's core members have now been shared on Game Freak's <a class="external" href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCstGT-0e8lJIehj44lyOgVA">YouTube channel</a> and sure enough, a question was asked about a possible sequel to the game known in Japan as <strong>Soliti Horse</strong>. While the development team is open to the idea, there's nothing necessarily in the pipeline.</p>

<p>In the past, there have been a lot of discussions about ugly-looking Switch HOME Menu icons. Arguably the biggest offender was <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/snake_pass">Snake Pass</a></strong> in 2017. The game icon was perfectly fine until one day it was <a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/07/random_internet_reacts_badly_to_the_new_snake_pass_menu_icon">changed</a> to resemble something that looked more like a mobile app.</p>
<p>While there was nothing particularly wrong with the <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/rocket_league">Rocket League</a></strong> icon in the first place, the game's developer and publisher Psyonix has decided to give it a slight makeover. As you can see above, the logo has been reduced in size and three cars have now been added into the picture. For the sake of comparison, here's the old one:</p>

<p>Typically, in survival games, you start with nothing and try to improve your situation by scavenging the surrounding area for resources. Usually what happens in terms of crafting is that your player character gets better over time. Either by finding recipes, or by distributing skill points, or both. In any case, most players can survive by themselves. Playing a lone wolf is almost always an option. Eventually you will be able to craft modern assault rifles with little more than what you were able to scavenge, and ores you smelt.</p>

<p>In <em>Fade to Silence</em>, the team at Black Forest tried to approach this from a different angle: The world in which Ash, Alice and their followers live has been thrown back into the frozen, middle ages. Electricity and other amenities that made their lives comfortable and allowed to form a global society, are gone. Ash’s survival and that of his daughter depend on the number and skills of his followers he can recruit into his refuge.</p>

<p>While being a good leader, Ash is by no means a superhero. And as a lone wolf, he would most certainly die. If anything, he can craft only the most basic items. Swords, axes and pickaxes out of scrap metal. Primitive bows and arrows. Clothing that allows him to survive “mild” temperatures as compared to the freezing cold that has a tight grip on this new world. If he wants better gear, he must recruit followers that are able to craft steel swords, hunting and war bows, heavy armor and thick, warming winter clothing.</p>

<p>In addition, his followers are the only ones who can construct necessary buildings in their refuge. Such as palisade walls and ramparts to hold off nightmarish creatures attacking the camp. Maybe even some siege weaponry. But also specialized crafting huts, like a butcher, or a forge must be built before any specialized crafting can take place.</p>

Horus and Set Arrive in Smite: The Battleground of the Gods

<p>Horus and Set — the legendary Egyptian rivals — are now playable characters in <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/smite/c2mhs238pdns?activetab=pivot:overviewtab"><strong><em>Smite</em></strong></a> on Xbox One and we’re excited to share a few details about what makes these new gods unique and fun to play.</p>
<p>Our design for Horus and Set started with their mythology, a tale of jealousy, murder, and revenge — a story as old as time, but on a divine scale. Their legends are so intertwined that releasing them together not only made sense from a lore standpoint, but also allowed us to design two Gods at once who represented vastly different play styles.</p>
<p>The story of Horus and Set really begins with Osiris, the god of earth. His rule over the two kingdoms of Egypt was a golden age of peace. But jealous anger brewed in the heart of Osiris’ younger brother, Set. Not content to live under his brother’s rule, Set murdered Osiris, cut him into pieces, and claimed his brother’s throne. To Set, this was an act of liberation. But to Horus, Osiris’ son, it was a call to war.</p>
<p>As the rightful heir to Osiris’ throne, Horus pledged himself to fight for justice and to reclaim his father’s throne not just for himself, but for his people. Horus will not rest until Set is defeated. And so, the two rivals are now locked in eternal battle for the crown of Egypt… and Olympus.</p>
<p>Let’s talk about gameplay. Our goal with Horus was to design a warrior in <em>Smite</em> that was unique from existing gods in that role. Represented as a falcon in Egyptian mythology, his head and birdlike proportions are important, but it’s Horus’s wings that define him. Not only do these massive wings bring personality and impact to his abilities, they are also used for his basic attacks. Though he can hold his own in fights, he’s best when he’s fighting alongside his teammates, and is often seen diving into the fray to protect his allies from danger. No matter where a friend is on the map, Horus can bring in reinforcements to turn the tide of battle.</p>
<p>Horus and Set are opposites, both in personality and gameplay. While Horus is calculated, defensive, and focused on his team, Set is aggressive and violent, trusting only himself to overwhelm his opponents.</p>
<p>Set is an Assassin in <em>Smite</em>, relying on his own strength and mastery of the sands. While he still needs to work with his team to achieve victory on the battlefield, he also can create his own allies from the very sands of the desert. Set conjures these allies to attack swiftly before they dissolve back into dust. For his ultimate, Set calls upon all of the power which his rage grants him, unleashing his claws and embracing his animalistic urges. He attacks faster and faster, letting his inner chaos free and ensuring his opponents’ doom.</p>
<p>There’s so much more in <em>Smite</em>’s upcoming Sands and Skies update. There’s an all-new event — Battle for Olympus — featuring amazing skins like Helheim Ullr. This incredible skin reimagines the Norse God of Glory as a mighty warrior felled by disease, now trapped in the Norse afterlife of Helheim instead of taking his rightful place among the warriors of Valhalla.</p>

<p><strong><em><a href="https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/battlefield-v/">Battlefield V</a></em></strong> on Xbox One continues to evolve, with each new chapter bringing players maps, modes, and more. Chapter 3: Trial by Fire is heating things up with the recently-unveiled Firestorm mode – battle royale, reimagined for Battlefield – and now the introduction of Battlefield Currency and Elites. <p><strong>Where to Get Currency and How to Spend It</strong></p>
<p>In <em>Battlefield V</em> there are two kinds of in-game currency. Company Coin is earned through gameplay and can be used to buy cosmetic items for your Company or to unlock choices within weapon and vehicle Specializations. The new Battlefield Currency can be purchased with real-world money and lets you buy cosmetic items and more – but nothing that will enable pay-to-win.</p>

<p>To purchase Battlefield Currency go to the in-game main menu, then either head to My Company, or the Armory (you can also click on any offer featured in the game menus). From there, choose the “Get Battlefield Currency” option. Outside of the game go to the Microsoft Store, search for <em>Battlefield V</em>, and <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/battlefield-v-battlefield-currency-3500/btm02frh3htn?activetab=pivot:overviewtab">choose one of the Battlefield Currency amounts</a>. To check your current balance just look at the upper right corner of your screen near your Company Coin balance.</p>
<p>Now that you’ve got your Battlefield Currency, check out the Armory to find out what you can buy with it.</p>

<li><strong>Cosmetic Customization Items</strong> – Epic and several cosmetic items already available through Company Coin</li>
<li><strong>Elite Sets</strong> – Unique characters (more info below) with a name and background that you can play as in multiplayer modes – including Firestorm. <p><strong>Who Are the Elites?</strong></p>
<p>Okay, let’s take a closer look at the Elites, which come as a set full of neat stuff as mentioned above. They’re available now in <em>Battlefield V</em> and here’s a few reasons why you might want to play as these unique soldiers.</p>
<p>The first thing to understand is that Elites work just like any other soldier, so there aren’t any gameplay advantages to playing as them. But if you want to bring some personality to your game, Elites are the way to do it.</p>
<p>The first two Elites you can add to your Company are Seamus Byrne (Allies) and Ernst Schubert (Axis). Both include signature looks, personas, voices, and melee weapons. You’ll unlock these melee weapons through Special Assignments exclusive to each Elite.</p>

<p>First up, Seamus Byrne, who joined the British Irish Guard to make sure he got right in the thick of the action as quickly as possible. Seamus is built for war: burly, brash, and just a bit reckless. He loves nothing better than winding up in close combat with the enemy where he can put his Lever Pipe melee weapon to good use. Seamus is the strong but not-so-silent type – he’s always got the perfect quip or one-liner for almost any circumstance. If subtle gameplay isn’t really your style, you’ll want to add this bold Irish rogue to your Company.</p>

<p>Next, meet Ernst Schubert, an Axis soldier as cold, unyielding, and deadly as his favorite melee weapon, the K98 Bayonet. He’s a man of few words and near infinite patience – taking the time to line up the perfect shot or flank the enemy for a silent kill. While he may not always be noticed on the battlefield, his presence is. Just look for gaping holes in the Allied lines, and you’ll know he’s somewhere nearby. Prefer to let your actions do the talking on the front lines? Ernst is your man.</p>
<p>Seamus and Ernst are just the beginning; they’ll be joined by the French freedom fighter Hanna Delacroix and ruthless Axis explosives expert Wilhelm Franke in late May, with more to come in future Chapters.</p>

<p>There are three constants in this world, it seems – Death, Taxes, and <strong>Picross</strong> sequels. Nintendo’s long-running puzzle franchise has now seen a whopping 33 entries and shows no signs of stopping, even though little has changed in the core gameplay of the main entries. But perhaps that’s the primary <em>strength</em> of Picross; there’s no shortage of potential nonogram puzzles one could create in the numbered grids that each game is packed with, and this is the rare sort of game that just about <em>anyone</em> can play. As the latest in this long lineage of puzzle games, <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/picross_s3">Picross S3</a></strong> is exactly the kind of game that you expect it to be – featuring hundreds of challenging nonogram puzzles that are sure to take dozens of hours to clear in their entirety – but, rather surprisingly, it also has a few surprises to set it apart from its predecessors.</p>
<p>For those of you who haven’t picked up one of the many predecessors, Picross puzzles are deduction challenges that could best be described as something of a cross between <strong>Minesweeper</strong> and <strong>Sudoku</strong>. Each puzzle consists of a neat grid laid out with a series of numbers affixed to its rows and columns, and these numbers tell you exactly how many squares in that row or column need to be coloured in.</p>

Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update Available Now for Free with Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One and Windows 10 PC

<p><em>Sea of Thieves</em> marked one year on March 20, and as part of our first birthday celebrations we put the cake aside long enough to lay out details of our largest update so far – the <em>Anniversary Update</em>, which introduces new game modes, requested gameplay features and enhancements that reshape the ways players enjoyed the game.</p>
<p>Today, we’re thrilled to announce the wait is over – the Anniversary Update is live, free for all <em>Sea of Thieves</em> players with Xbox Game Pass or on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. We hope this is an update both existing players and new fans can dive right into, and are thrilled to finally share what we’ve been building. Here at Rare, we’ve spent the last few weeks taking a close look at what the update has in store via a series of livestreams from our Twycross HQ, but in case you’ve been locked in the brig since then, here’s a brief reminder:</p>

<p>We began by drawing our swords and sailing into <strong><em>The Arena</em></strong>, a new and highly-competitive player vs. player multiplayer experience that distils the quintessential <em>Sea of Thieves</em> gameplay of sailing, shooting and looting into fixed-length play sessions where rewards are given not just for success, but for the havoc you wreak along the way.</p>
<p>In <em>The Arena</em>, five crews will take command of galleons and set out in pursuit of the same buried booty. Being the crew that grabs the treasure and returns it safely to the new Sea Dogs Trading Company will earn your crew some valuable silver, but so will scoring hits against enemy vessels with cannon fire and taking out other players in combat. Now that ships can suffer damage to their wheel, masts and capstan, these sea battles will offer even more tactical depth and more opportunities for mayhem. The crew with the most silver at the end of each 24-minute bout will earn a well-deserved victory, and so <em>The Arena</em> is the perfect way to experience the hectic hilarity of a <em>Sea of Thieves</em> voyage when you only have a short time to play.</p>
<p>If you’re exhausted after the broadsides and brawling of <em>The Arena</em>, there’s now a brand-new way to relax and unwind courtesy of a fan-favourite feature: fishing. Yes, pirates will able to cast a line into any body of water and try their luck at catching different kinds of fish. Some species will respond to different types of bait, others can only be found in certain regions of the world and more elusive types won’t show so much as a tailfin unless the conditions are right, so there’ll be plenty of experimentation involved if you’re looking to impress.</p>
<p>Impress who? That’s where the gourmets of the <strong>Hunter’s Call</strong> come in<em>.</em> This new Trading Company can be found at sea ports across the <em>Sea of Thieves</em>, and they’ll reward pirates who are able to hand over rare and exotic types of fish and other meats – especially if they’ve been cooked to perfection over a campfire or on your ship’s new stove. Of course, if you’ve dished up the perfect maritime meal, you might decide to keep it for yourself and use it as a health-boosting snack down the line.</p>
<p>If you’d rather reel in a bigger, angrier prize, the new harpoons aboard your ship can be used to snag barrels, chests and even other pirates! They’re also handy for tethering yourself to another ship, making it much easier to board other vessels. Harpoons have plenty of other uses too, but we’ll leave you to discover those for yourselves…</p>

<p>Last but most certainly not least, our Anniversary Update livestreams introduced the first set of Tall Tales, <strong><em>Shores of Gold</em></strong>. Tall Tales provide narrative-focused adventures set within the shared world of <em>Sea of Thieves</em> and can be enjoyed by crews and solo players alike. In <em>Shores of Gold</em>, pirates will assemble the mythical Shroudbreaker artefact, seeking to use its power and reach a mysterious island filled with fabulous riches.</p>
<p>Along the way, players will solve puzzles, explore ancient labyrinths, dodge traps and do battle with fearsome Skeleton Lords. The story spans nine Tall Tales, each of which has been designed to combine dramatic storytelling and narrative cutscenes (voiced by professional actors) but still be playable and enjoyable over and over, especially since they take place in a living, unpredictable world where other players might well have their part to play in your adventure.</p>
<p>It’s been a transformative first year for <em>Sea of Thieves</em>, and everyone on the team is super-proud of what the Anniversary Update means for the game. On behalf of all of us here at Rare, I’d like to encourage players old and new to go and check out all the new features – whatever kind of pirate you are, we’re sure there’s something in there you’ll love. Ghost Recon Wildlands Free Weekend Begins With New Story Content

<p>There are new mysteries to uncover in the massive open world of <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/tom-clancys-ghost-recon-wildlands-standard-edition/c2n9cs4fs1qr"><strong><em>Ghost Recon Wildlands</em></strong></a>, and this weekend, Xbox Live Gold members can investigate them for free. Starting 10:01 a.m. PDT on May 2 through 10:00 a.m. PDT on May 6, <em>Ghost Recon Wildlands</em> will be free to download and play on Xbox One. This coincides with the launch of Operation Oracle, a new, free narrative arc in which a routine hostage extraction turns into something much bigger—and this time, it’s not because your co-op teammate has alerted the guards and all hell has broken loose (at least, not yet).</p>
<p>Operation Oracle is playable solo or with a co-op team of up to three other players with Xbox Live Gold. The target for the new missions is a Skell Tech engineer taken hostage by Unidad forces. As you seek to rescue your target from heavily armed military captors, you will meet Cole D. Walker, a Ghost Team Lead on a mission of his own. What you learn in the process will shake up your perceptions about who your enemies and friends truly are.</p>
<p>The <em>Ghost Recon Wildlands</em> Free Weekend starts at 10:01 a.m. PDT on May 2 and ends at 10:00 a.m. PDT on May 6 . Not only will you be able to take a crack at Operation Oracle, you’ll also have access to all the free content that has been released since launch, including new campaign modes; new missions featuring Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell cameos; and new maps, modes, and classes for the dedicated PVP arena, Ghost War.</p>
<p>Any progress you make during the free weekend will carry over if you purchase the full game. Whether you’re dropping in from a helicopter at midnight for a stealth infiltration, blowing open the gates and driving in with mounted guns blazing, or anything in between, <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/tom-clancys-ghost-recon-wildlands-standard-edition/c2n9cs4fs1qr"><strong><em>Ghost Recon Wildlands</em></strong></a> lets you take on threats the way you want. <p>“Every hero has a Genesis,” the trailer tells us. Unfortunately, we’re not convinced anybody at Paramount has ever even seen one. Whether you’re a fan of the blue hedgehog’s original Sega Genesis/Mega Drive <em>oeuvre</em>, partial to his brave strides into the third dimension on Dreamcast or have been keeping up with his latest exploits across all platforms in the modern era, anybody who holds him in high esteem likely watched today’s reveal for the upcoming live-action <strong>Sonic the Hedgehog</strong> film through their fingers in absolute horror. Regardless of which era you’re a fan of, the version coming to cinema screens in November doesn’t appear to please anyone who’s ever enjoyed a platformer starring Sega’s mascot.</p>
<p>Perhaps his timing is simply bad. The imminent release of <strong>Detective Pikachu</strong> and the deluge of media accompanying it leads to inevitable comparisons between the two video gaming franchise movies, but where the Pokémon film and its design has met with much praise after initial shock at the Pokémon's 'fur', it’s tough to find anyone who thinks that Sonic looks like anything but a nightmare.</p>

<p><a href="https://news.microsoft.com/features/how-the-xbox-adaptive-controller-is-helping-va-medical-centers-support-veterans/">Today, on Microsoft Stories</a>, we shared some exciting news: Microsoft is partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide <a href="https://news.microsoft.com/stories/xbox-adaptive-controller/">Xbox Adaptive Controller</a> units to 22 initial VA rehab centers across the U.S.</p>
<p>For active duty military members, playing video games can help release stress, build camaraderie and offer comforting familiarity in foreign environments. For veterans returning from combat, gaming can reduce isolation, renew connections with fellow service members and provide therapeutic benefits.</p>
<p>While gaming is a popular activity among the military community, navigating a traditional controller can be difficult or impossible for injured veterans. The inability to game can mean the loss of connection to veterans’ military communities and to an activity that was a significant part of their lives during service.</p>
<p>This partnership aims to give veterans with limited mobility the opportunity to game again, get them more involved with their rehabilitation and increase social interaction.</p>

Review: Shadows Of Adam - A Short But Sweet Throwback To The Glory Days Of 16-Bit JRPGs

<p>Once upon a time, traditional JRPGs were ten a penny. Even a few generations ago we were inundated with riffs on that very familiar formula, from <strong>Shadow Hearts</strong> to <strong>Shin Megami Tensei</strong> and beyond. Today, that recipe has evolved in all manner of directions leaving those more classic JRPGs as more curio than common. In both gameplay and presentation, <a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/shadows_of_adam"><strong>Shadows of Adam</strong></a> attempts to hark back to those glory days on the SNES, only making a few slight changes rather than overhauling its core tenants entirely.</p>
<p>The story follows the young lives of Kellan and his adopted sister Asrael, who awake to find their titular home of Adam is now being poisoned by a vine-like infestation known as the Tangle. As the children of famed hero Orazio – who disappeared into the surrounding forests a decade before, never to be seen again – the people of the village look to Kellan and Asrael to accept the mantle of their father’s exploits and ‘deal’ with the Tangle once and for all. Eventually joined by two more party members – the punch-happy Curtis and the roguish Talon – our heroes soon find themselves dealing with more than just angry purple vines.</p>

<p><strong>Bird game devs really struggle with titles, don't they?</strong></p>
<p>The black-and-white art you can see in the trailer above and screenshots below is coming to Switch this Friday 3rd May in <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/bird_game_plus">Bird Game +</a></strong>. Described by the developer Bryan Tabor as a 'sweet fly 'em game', you control the aforementioned bird as it glides through an illustrated world that comes to life as you fly.</p>
<p>Apparently a 'difficult yet relaxing adventure', you'll be avoiding enemies and obstacles and taking on bosses at the end of each of the game's three handcrafted levels. Other features include an endless mode, leaderboards and various secrets and challenges.</p>

Watching the above clip from a contemporary promotional video will surely bring back memories, but veterans of the game will immediately notice that something's now quite right.</p>
<p>Bond never used an elevator like that in the Silo mission, and the movement looks a little slow, too. That would be because it's early demo footage from when the game was still an on-rails shooter. David Doak - famed developer on the game and also star scientist of the Facility level - was asked to provide information on the footage and confirmed that it comes from before he joined the project:</p>

CROSSNIQ+ Brings Dreamcast-Like 'Y2K' Arcade Puzzling To Switch In Q3

<p><strong>Just in the NIQ of time.</strong></p>
<p>Self-described as an 'arcade-style, speed-oriented, "y2k aesthetic" flavored puzzle game - a tribute to highly polished, small-scope Japanese games from the late 90s', <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/crossniqplus">CROSSNIQ+</a></strong> is coming to Switch and PC in Q3 this year. The game has you rearranging the tiles on a grid to form rows and columns of the same colour.</p>
<p>Tiles can be moved in the cardinal directions to form 'crosses' and score points. Each edge wraps around to the opposite side and forming 'multi-crosses' quickly earns you bonuses. As you can see from the trailer above, it's got a certain turn-of-the-century style to it which feels <em>very</em> Dreamcast if you ask us.</p>

<p>Dylan Cuthbert, founder of Q-Games and best-known as lead programmer on the original <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/snes/star_fox">Star Fox</a></strong>, has recently been on <a href="https://twitter.com/dylancuthbert/status/1123029966575349760">Twitter</a> sharing some personal Nintendo stories from back in the day. His most recent account details a particular cold December night when he stayed late working on one of Star Fox's final builds.</p>

<p>Since Marcus "Notch" Persson sold Minecraft to Microsoft for $2.5 billion back in 2014, the tech giant has released the game on as many platforms as possible and unified platforms with the "<a class="external" href="https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/better-together-faq">Better Together</a>" update. Microsoft and the developer Mojang both want to maintain the game's friendly image as well.</p>

<p>Towards the end of last year, PM Studios revealed <strong><a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/opus_collection_the_day_we_found_earth_plus_rocket_of_whispers">OPUS Collection: The Day We Found Earth + Rocket of Whispers</a></strong> would <a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/11/opus_collection_will_bring_both_games_in_the_series_to_switch_in_one_physical_package">arrive</a> in physical form on the Switch.</p>
<p>It's now been confirmed the two-in-one collection will be released in North America on 28th May. This is <a class="external" href="https://gematsu.com/2019/04/opus-collection-the-day-we-found-earth-rocket-of-whispers-for-switch-delayed-to-may-28-in-north-america">reportedly</a> a slight delay. The game was due out this month but has now been pushed back to next month.</p>
