<p>We are still a couple of months away from the release of <strong>The Super Mario Bros. Movie</strong> on 7th April 2023, but that means that the publicity can only increase from here. Remember that brief period of trepidation where none of us knew what the movie would look, sound, or even remotely <em>be</em> like? Ah, what sweet bliss. Now, we know all of the above and (to the amazement of many) we are almost 100% on board with it!</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2023/01/new-mario-bros-movie-footage-shows-off-seth-rogen-as-donkey-kong">most recent trailer</a> brought with it even more game references as we got an extended look at Mario's fight with Donkey Kong in which the plumber dons a Cat Suit, presumably due to the appearance of a Super Bell. While the ensuing "meow" was enough to send a shiver down our spines, we have to admit that the idea of suits and power-ups appearing throughout the film is a pretty darn cool one.</p>

Review: Life Is Strange 2 - A Solid Switch Port For This Thrilling Second Story

<p><strong>Highway to hell?</strong></p>
<p>Given the critical and commercial success enjoyed by <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/life_is_strange_arcadia_bay_collection">Life is Strange</a> back in 2015, creating a compelling direct sequel can’t have been easy for developer Dontnod. Yet just three years later, players were surprised with a brand new story that was every bit as emotionally affecting as the first, if not more so. It boasts a plot that was both intimate yet grand in scope, taking two core protagonists on a road trip from hell after a tragedy tears them from their comfortable home life. In 2023, though, as the last main part of the Life is Strange puzzle to come to Switch, does the game still hold up? Well, yes… <em>mostly</em>.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/life_is_strange_2">Life is Strange 2</a> for the Switch contains all five episodes that were originally released over a staggered period of time back in 2019, as you would hope. Each episode will last you a couple of hours or so, so you’re looking at roughly 10-12 hours to complete the whole package, give or take. It uses that time pretty effectively, using the episodic structure to maintain a decent sense of pace throughout.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/snes/legend_of_zelda_a_link_to_the_past">The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past</a>, one of the most beloved entries in Nintendo's storied franchise, has been successfully reverse-engineered, adding key enhancements to the experience and potentially opening the door to some unofficial ports.</p>
<p>As reported by <a class="external" href="https://www.neowin.net/news/zelda-a-link-to-the-past-can-now-be-compiled-on-windows-and-nintendo-switch/" rel="noopener">NeoWin</a> (thanks, <a href="https://www.timeextension.com/news/2023/01/zelda-link-to-the-past-could-unofficially-come-to-non-nintendo-systems">Time Extension</a>!) the project has been completed by GitHub user <a class="external" href="https://github.com/xander-haj" rel="noopener">xander-haj</a> with the assistance of 19 other contributors, reverse-engineering the SNES title to completion over an incredible 80,000 lines of code.</p>

Disney Dreamlight Valley Teases A New Animal Companion - With A HAT

<p>In anticipation of <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/disney_dreamlight_valley">Disney Dreamlight Valley</a>'s February update, which will <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/features/everything-announced-in-disney-dreamlight-valleys-2023-roadmap-multiplayer-olaf-and-more">add Encanto's Mirabel and Frozen's Olaf to the valley</a>, the Gameloft community managers are sharing little glimpses of what else is to come.</p>
<p>The latest tease is part of the upcoming Star Path, which is themed around Disney's 100th anniversary, and will add a new animal companion to the game. Each Star Path has added a new animal companion, like the Halloween Wind-Up Raccoon, and the cute little Christmas fox, and this one is a fancy little silver bunny with a cute hat and a teeny-tiny tuxedo. Very sweet.</p>

Random: Unused Bond Face Textures Finally Erased From Switch Online's Goldeneye 007 Code

<p>If you were around in the late 1990s and happily poured many hours into <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/n64/goldeneye_007">GoldenEye 007</a>, then you have probably come across the 'Four Bonds' hoax. This was a theory which stated that it was possible to unlock the face textures for previous Bond actors Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton in the game's multiplayer mode after completing a series of near-impossible tasks.</p>
<p>This was, of course, not true (regardless of what Nintendo-working uncles might tell you); although the face textures of these past Bonds <em>did</em> exist in the game's ROM in some rudimentary form after initial plans to add the actors were scrapped thanks to some pesky legal worries. While the other Bond models were removed completely, the face textures were instead moved to the 'unused pile' rather than risk deleting anything else from the game's build so close to release.</p>

The last update for this title was featured in a <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/11/nintendo-reconfirms-release-windows-for-major-upcoming-switch-games">Nintendo financial report</a> last November - revealing the game's release date was still "TBA".</p>
<p>Now, in the latest development, a thread on Famiboards has apparently highlighted changes to the game's eShop web page - with "new NSUID attached". As explained in the same post, a new NSUID means "pre-orders will be going live at some point in the future".</p>

<p>Legends: Arceus sees you get thrown back in time thanks to resident Pokémon god, Arceus, to the Hisui region — which would later become known as the Sinnoh region. The game shoves aside many traditional Pokémon mechanics and introduced various new features, but the hunt to fulfill Arceus' wishes of "seeing all Pokémon" (this god has the power to give you a phone in the Pokéworld, apparently) is the ultimate goal. This is no longer just about catching and battling — you're a full-fledged Pokémon researcher.</p>

Whether a ham-fisted portmanteau of <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/arcade/darius">Darius</a> and <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/arcade_archives_gradius">Gradius</a>, or relating to the game’s core mechanic, it’s a silly name any way you look at it. Japan-based developer Team Ladybug, more recently known for the rather good <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/record_of_lodoss_war_deedlit_in_wonder_labyrinth">Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth</a>, has had the Switch shooting game hardcore waiting eight months since the game’s Steam release, but does it live up to the hype?</p>
<p>Drainus pays homage to many genre classics; a touch of <a href="https://www.timeextension.com/games/dreamcast/border_down">Border Down</a> in its ship functions and styling, a nod to <a href="https://www.pushsquare.com/games/ps1/einhander">Einhander</a> in the aesthetic of its stage-two train assault, and plenty of <a href="https://www.pushsquare.com/games/ps2/gradius_v">Gradius V</a> in its transforming boss phases. The one influence that’s been touted heavily in previews, inexplicably, is <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/ikaruga">Ikaruga</a>, as if it’s the only other title in the genre the mainstream gaming press has ever heard of. While Drainus features a system of absorbing enemy fire that can be returned in a flurry of homing lasers, the execution here has far more in common with Takumi’s <strong>Giga Wing</strong> than it does Treasure’s puzzle-shmup hybrid, making it a largely erroneous comparison.</p>

<p>We've heard requests for a Switch and Xbox side-by-side comparison of <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/n64/goldeneye_007">GoldenEye 007</a>, so here it is. It's all thanks to our sister site <a class="external" href="https://www.purexbox.com/"><strong>Pure Xbox</strong></a>, and the amazing efforts of video producer Craig Reid (along with a little help from our own video team).</p>
<p>On paper, there are some differences between the two versions in terms of features. Firstly, the Switch version has the ability to take multiplayer sessions online. On the Xbox front, the controls are set up for dual-analog gaming, it's got achievements and it displays in native 16:9 widescreen at up to 4K Ultra HD.</p>

<p>Remember in 2020 when the spoon-bending magician Uri Geller publicly apologised for getting Kadabra banned from the Pokémon Trading Card Game and asked Nintendo to bring it back? Well, it seems like it could finally be happening.</p>
<p>According to a story on PokeBeach, a new "sell sheet" for the "Pokémon Card 151" set mentions how the original 151 Pokémon will feature. An "Alakazam ex" card is also named in the set. Geller has shared the following voice message with the source <a class="external" href="https://www.pokebeach.com/2023/01/pokemon-card-151-set-announced-for-june-new-ex-starter-decks-in-july">in response to this news</a> - admitting he "was a fool" to sue when Kadabra was "basically a tribute". <p>After receiving a meaty update in the free <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/07/into-the-breachs-free-advanced-edition-update-lands-on-switch-today">Advanced Edition</a> drop last summer, Subset Games' <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/into_the_breach">Into The Breach</a> has continued to be a mainstay of our turn-based tactics playtime. According to a recent post from the developers on the game's <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IntoTheBreach/comments/10jh61x/news_january_update_patch_notes_v1288/">Reddit forum</a>, a new update will soon be dropping into the game, bringing various bug fixes and improvements our way (thanks, <a href="https://nintendoeverything.com/into-the-breach-update-announced-version-1-2-88-patch-notes/">Nintendo Everything</a>).</p>
<p>In amongst these changes are tweaks to some of the in-game achievements ("Let's Walk" and "Pacifist"), improved visibility on certain tiles and a Switch-specific change that allows for greater touchscreen control — one of the best additions to the game, if you ask us.</p>

Sonic Frontiers Director Talks About Dropping Boost Mechanic In Next Game

<p>According to Sega, <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/sonic_frontiers">Sonic Frontiers</a> is a new phase for the blue blur - with the head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka previously mentioning how it was the "next step" for the long-running series. The game's director Morio Kishimoto has also spoken on a number of occasions about the future of the series.</p>
<p>Now, in his latest round of tweets, he discussed the boost mechanic featured in Frontiers. While it was incorporated in the end, Kishimoto says he would be open to releasing a Sonic game that doesn't include boost. And while he apparently understands the benefits of the boost function, he wouldn't mind challenging the level design in the series, a bit like the <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/gamecube/sonic_adventure_2_battle">Sonic Adventure</a> series did.</p>

SteamWorld Build Announced, And It Brings A SteamWorld Twist To SimCity

<p>Thunderful has announced a brand new game in the <strong>SteamWorld</strong> series — <strong>SteamWorld Build</strong>! And it's yet another genre twist in the SteamWorld universe later this year on Switch! <p>Moving on from action, platforming, Metroidvania, and deck-building, SteamWorld Build is a city builder meets dungeon crawler. You need to build and maintain cities on the surface of the world all while mining for resources and fighting enemies underground. <p><strong>"Power up complete".</strong></p>
<p>Whatever your view is on 2002's <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/gamecube/super_mario_sunshine">Super Mario Sunshine</a>, we reckon most would agree that the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device - or "F.L.U.D.D." for short - was an excellent addition to the franchise that made for some truly unique gameplay mechanics.</p>
<p>Since then, of course, Mario has been into space, trekked across a vast desert, strolled down the streets of New Donk City, and turned himself into a spring, a frog, a Tyrannosaurus rex, and more. Yet there's still hope among Sunshine fans that perhaps F.L.U.D.D might make another appearance in a 3D Mario game. Until then, however, this mod from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@justkant8">JustKant</a> might be the closest we'll get for quite some time (thanks, <a href="https://gonintendo.com/contents/15236-fan-mod-adds-f-l-u-d-d-to-super-mario-odyssey">GoNintendo</a>).</p>

<p>Well folks, it's happened: <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/fifa_23">FIFA 23</a> has finally been knocked off its throne by none other than <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/fire_emblem_engage">Fire Emblem Engage</a>, the latest entry in the tactical RPG franchise from Intelligent Systems.</p>
<p>Its debut marks the second biggest launch in the series to date, coming in ahead of the 3DS fan-favourite <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/3ds/fire_emblem_awakening">Fire Emblem: Awakening</a>, but behind its Switch predecessor <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/fire_emblem_three_houses">Fire Emblem: Three Houses</a>. According to <a href="https://www.gamesindustry.biz/the-last-of-us-part-1-sales-jumped-238-after-tv-show-launch-uk-boxed-charts">GamesIndustry.biz</a>, Engage's boxed sales were 31% lower than Three Houses, but obviously keep in mind that digital sales - for which Nintendo doesn't provide figures - have made considerable strides since 2019.</p>
