Review: Olija - A Cinematic Adventure Packed With Atmosphere

<p><strong>Return of the Obra Flinthook.</strong></p> <p><a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/olija">Olija</a> is, at its simplest, an action-platformer with a harpoon that lets you grapple up to different areas. If you played the fantastically dynamic <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/flinthook">Flinthook</a> – or you've used <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/3ds/legend_of_zelda_ocarina_of_time_3d">Zelda</a>'s Hookshot – then you'll recognise the mechanic: shoot hook, dash to hook, repeat. Mini Review: Disjunction - A Fine-Looking Homage To Konami's Classic Metal Gear Titles

<p><strong>Tactical Dystopian Action.</strong></p> <p>Stealth games are pretty hard to come by these days. <em>Good</em> ones are even fewer and far between. The good news is that <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/disjunction">Disjunction</a> feels like a breath of fresh air, then. Its gameplay is like a love letter to stealth games of yore, melding together tight, responsive gunplay with effective close-range combat, all wrapped up in a nostalgic, visually arresting package that <em>absolutely</em> calls back to the MSX2 <strong>Metal Gear</strong> titles.</p> <p>Taking place in a dystopian, cyber-punk version of New York City, you play as three unique characters, each with their own distinct narrative. The storyline is surprisingly engaging from the start, with codec conversations and physical encounters driving the plot as you advance to each level. Review: Shadow Gangs - A Tough-As-Nails Shinobi Tribute That's Worth Your Time

<p><strong>Giant evil Freddie Mercury. How's that for a hook?</strong></p> <p>We’ve played a <em>lot</em> of tough games here at Nintendo Life. We’re no strangers to the Game Over screen, but equally, <em>we never gave up.</em> You could say we’ve been around the block. We’ve knocked out Mr Dream. We’ve cleared <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/super_smash_bros_ultimate">Smash Bros. Ultimate</a> at 9.9 intensity. There’s very little we baulk at. But we're not ashamed to admit that <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/shadow_gangs">Shadow Gangs</a> got switched down to the easier “Rising Ninja” mode after a good few hours spent on the first mission.</p> <p>Yep, from the first area of the first mission, we were getting our butt handed to us, with trickily-placed enemies designed to catch out the careless player, not to mention the psychological factor of the constantly ticking clock. It’s a game that encourages you to move fast, then puts hazards in your way to catch you out when you do. Review: Golden Force - Vibrant Action-Platforming Marred By Rough Edges

<p><strong>A disturbance in the Force.</strong></p> <p>The initial vibe we picked up from side-scroller <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/golden_force">Golden Force</a> was a very positive one. The mixture of platforming and combat – complete with power moves, juggles and burst-dashes – recalled Treasure’s GBA masterpiece <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/gba/astro_boy_the_omega_factor">Astro Boy: The Omega Factor</a>. It may not be the most well-known game, but trust us when we say this: anything that can capture its essence – even momentarily – has something worthwhile to offer. While it can’t justify this comparison for its duration, to even mention it in the same breath as Astro Boy speaks to the effort that’s been poured into Golden Force.</p> <p>Taking control of one of four characters – or <em>two</em> of four in local multiplayer – it’s a fairly straightforward action-platformer in concept, but the execution is a cut above average in several ways. Mini Review: Colossus Down - A Neat Concept Squandered By Bland Gameplay

<p><strong>Titan-falls short of greatness.</strong></p> <p>The idea of running amok in a giant mech is certainly a tantalising one, isn’t it? With Mango Protocol’s <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/colossus_down">Colossus Down</a>, this is exactly what seven-year-old child prodigy Nika decides to do. Following on directly from 2015’s short title <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/mechanika">MechaNika</a>, Colossus Down is a 2D side-scrolling brawler in which you must destroy anything and everything that Nike deems is ‘not awesome’. It’s a neat idea that’s ultimately squandered by bland, repetitive gameplay and wholly unliveable characters.</p> <p>Nika’s mission to rebel against humanity – and all it encapsulates – is <em>bemusing</em>, at best. Without the context of the previous game to explain <em>why</em> she’s decided to embark on her quest of destruction, Nika’s character just comes across as petulant and, well, <em>evil</em>.
